How does Victorian tile restoration work?

restoration tiled-hallway North londonRestoring Victorian hallway tiles is a two fold process of cleaning and repairing.

The tiles have over the years become very dirty and sometimes stained, and then there is the damaged, cracked tiles that need replacement. There is also the frequent occurrence of damaged screeds that we need to repair as well.

In many instances we find that clients have tried to clean the tiles themselves and used acid etc. This is a bad idea as it doesn’t work properly and then the tiles may be too damaged to restore on account of staining.

We will generally strip the floor down and whilst on the job test to see what works the best. In the process we use heavy floor cleaning machinery and with allot of scrubbing and the use of specialized diamond brushing we can usually get the tiles looking good.

We will repair sunken areas of the screed and replace missing and damaged tiles throughout the hallway usually with modern reproduction tiles that we get from Original Style and Olde English Tiles. On occasion clients have sourced original tiles for their hallway which we will use as well.

The new tiles that we use to repair these Victorian hallways with do look a little different, however spread throughout the floor they are not that noticeable. And they look much better than cracked and stained tiles.

We work mostly in Hertfordshire and North London but do go to West London and places further off such as Essex and Bedfordshire.

Costs and Prices

The problem with this work is that it is very time consuming!

We often have to make the tiles up as we go as new tiles dont match the sizes due to the variation in these floors. It is fiddly and slow work that we dont really get to charge allot of money for. We will usually say to the client we expect the job to take 3 or 4 days and then give them a day rate. These rates can vary but have been around £200 for us. There is always a materials cost for chemicals/adhesives/equipment usage of about £100 -150 and then tiles can range from £0,50 – £2 each. Generally we can do up to 40- 50 tiles a day type thing.

Its simple, the more time we spend on it the better we can get it!
