This Victorian tiling design is what we refer to as a standard Black and White checkerboard.
This is a fairly common design and we do many of these all the time.
There are a few ways to mix this design up in order to adjust cost, effect and general appearance which we will attempt to explain below.
Body tiles
Originally this design was done predominantly with the smaller 5cm tiles in the body of the hallway or pathway. Now days we tend to offer the option of enlarging the body tile to 7cm or 10cm to both reduce costs and change the appearance.
Bigger tiles are cheaper and also easier / faster to lay. Clients have also said that bigger tiles look less busy and so “are not too much”. We tend to say the wider the pathway or hallway the bigger you can go with the body tile.
Victorian Tile Borders
This border seen above goes with all three different sized body tiles. However sometimes people prefer a more basic look and also want to save some money. In this case we recommend a basic border option seen in the image below. See how a simple white line serves as a border but is easy to install.
