Deep cleaning process for Victorian hallway tiles

There is no quick fix for cleaning Victorian tiles properly and the reason they remain dirty over the decades is that the old solidified waxes and oils sitting deep inside the tiles is very hard to remove. To clean them one has to focus in on every tile and square inch with several different chemicals and professional cleaning methods. It can take up to two days on a standard size hallway if they are hard to clean.

The cleaning process and chemicals are similar for exterior Victorian tiles on pathways except that we use more mould removing chemicals and they can not be finished with topical waxes that make these tiles shine. Instead we can only seal them with colour enhancing impregnating type tile sealers.

When cleaning we find a somewhat satisfying sludge comes out of the tiles even though the homeowner usually says they cleaned them allot

After the deep cleaning stage we are usually left with quite porous flat dull looking tiles. You can see the naked tiles in the top part of the image above. This is because all of the hardened oils and waxes that where darkening the tiles have been drawn out. Now we need to refinish the tiles with clean new sealers and waxes.
